Portly Pets Clinic

As we all know, an abundance of food over the holidays adds to our waistline. This is also the case for our pets! Our qualified nurses, Dawn & Donna will be running FREE weight clinics in the New Year, so call up the surgery to book in your pet for a weigh-in.  They will be able to assist with any questions you have and provide ideas to help you towards a healthier, fitter pet.

Staff News

We currently have a student Veterinary Nurse, Jodie from Edinburgh Napier University on placement with us.

Jodie comes from Strabane, Northern Ireland. That’s one more accent to add into the practice! She will be with us until April. Welcome Jodie!

PATIENTS ON LONG-TERM MEDICATION

In accordance with RCVS and Veterinary Medicine Directorate recommendations, all pets receiving repeat prescription medications need to be regularly re-examined by a veterinary surgeon. To comply with this we require to see our patients on long-term medication every 3 months. At these visits not only can we ensure your pet is on medication that is still suitable for them and at a beneficial dose, but we can also use these visits to give your pet a general health check and discuss any concerns you may have with them.

If you have been seen recently and need more medication please call to order it in advance on 0141-445-6869 or e-mail us at campbellandgallowaynews@hotmail.co.uk, so that your medicines can be dispensed, checked by the vet, and ready and waiting for you.

Photo Album

We are trying to update our Pet Photo Album so please send us pictures of your pets either by e-mail at campbellandgallowaynews@hotmail.co.uk or drop one in when you are next visiting.    We hope you’ll agree a big book of our clients’ animals is a lovely thing to view when in the waiting room.

Arthritis

This month’s focus is Arthritis.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint or several joints. The most commonly affected joints in dogs and cats are hips, knees or elbows.

What predisposes to joint problems?

  • Pet’s age
  • Certain breeds
  • Excess weight
  • Accidents
  • Congenital defects

Clinical Signs

  • Decreased activity
  • Lameness
  • Pain or swelling of joints
  • Difficulty walking, running or jumping
  • Change in behaviour
  • Difficulty climbing stairs
  • Difficulty standing after exercise
  • Difficulty rising after rest

Treatment

  • Anti-inflammatory medications prescribed by the vet
  • Joint support containing glucosamine, chondrotin and/or green lipped mussel
  • Physiotherapy
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Acupuncture

Other things that may help

  • Weight loss
  • Gentle exercise
  • Ramps to get into the car etc
  • Raise pet’s food dishes so they don’t have to stoop to eat
  • A warm, comfy bed in a draught-free area
  • Slip free floors- place a rug to aid walking on slippery floors

We are running FREE arthritis clinics throughout January & February.  Please book in your middle-aged & senior pets for a check up with one of the team for a chat about arthritis, what you can do to help including a ‘home physiotherapy’ lesson and to claim your FREE physiotherapy DVD (starring some of the Campbell & Galloway team, as well as Nigel, Harry, Coby, Bella & Buffy!)

Campbell’s Corner

Final word to all from practice principal Karen Campbell.

I can’t believe it’s almost February!  I hope we are all over the ‘Turkey-itis’ and other post-Christmas tummy troubles.

Thanks once again to you all (too many of you to list everyone here!) for the wonderful Christmas presents, chocolates and cards.   These included photo cards (Gemma and Millie are naturally photogenic), a beautiful homemade card from Paula, tasty homemade mince pies from Julie (I ate about ten in 2 days) and also thanks to Sandra, Stuart and Milly who did themselves proud with yet another wonderful Christmas lunch.  The practice dogs – Harry, Coby and Nigel sat patiently at our feet hoping to catch the odd crumb – but nae luck boys!

I would also like to mention all those pets we have said goodbye to over the past year.  Even though they are no longer with us, we will forever have fond memories of them.

We would like to welcome all of our new clients too.   Thanks for finding us, and we look forward to helping you however we can for years to come.  Some of our clients (and their children and grandchildren!) have been coming to this practice since the days of “Weir  & Thompson”.  This was the original practice where Campbell and Galloway Vets started its journey, about 65 years ago at Shields Road, Pollokshields.  It was at this practice I started, nearly 22 years ago, when it had become ‘Stead & Galloway’.  I am still in touch with Margaret Stead and Fiona Galloway, so if you wish me to pass on any sentiments then please contact me at the practice!

I hope 2013 is full of happy purrs and waggy dogs’ tails,

All the Best

Karen
